"Being in a half lotus position does not make you less realized any more than being in a full lotus position makes you fully enlightened. In actuality, being in the fullness of a yoga pose can result in the arising of a yogi's most threatening enemy, the great ego of competition and accomplishment." ~ Diane Avice du Buisson
Yoga is a profound adventure into Self realization and your yoga practice will be different every time you come to the mat. Even if you practice the same asanas in the same sequences consistently, yoga will present new limitations and liberations depending on the current state of your mind, body, and emotions. Change is inevitable and impermanence is a truth we cannot deny.
As we age through life, our bodies shift in size and various stages of health. What we require to keep in balance is different on a daily basis, from yoga asanas to the foods we eat. How many times have we eaten food that is too rich for us and then awakened in the night while the body attempted to process the meal? We are always seeking balance in every aspect of our lives and that balance can change with one meal, one activity, a single meditation session or an asana practice.
Thirty years of yoga practices have brought me to the realization that it is of greatest benefit to adapt yoga practices to the individual rather than trying to adapt the individual to yoga. The most effective way to achieve this is with one-on-one yoga instruction and personalized attention.
This autumn I am shifting my life's work with the community to an offering of yoga sessions for individuals only. The results of this work will encourage each student to develop a stay-at-home practice and the personalized knowledge gained can then extend beyond the home into the multitude of yoga classes being offered in the world today.
